Vergil and Dante have been at odds for years, and the older brother still believes humanity isn't worth saving, and that power is everything. Once Dante takes down the "Demon King," V is reabsorbed into Urizen becoming Vergil once more. V, whose lifeforce is slowly fading as the story continues, eventually makes it to the battlefield where Dante and Urizen are. Vergil has amassed great power from the underworld, becoming Urizen. Vergil then used the Yamato to stab himself to purge his humanity, creating V. He used Nero's arm, the Devil Breaker that absorbed the power of the Yamato, to regain the sword.
